The NBA 2K18 box art for Switch contains many wonderful warnings

Advertisement

NBA 2K18 launched just the other week on all consoles, including the Switch with one caveat. The Switch version only launched on the eShop with a retail version promised to follow later next month.

The retail version of NBA 2K18 as we know will require a hefty download, even if you buy it on the card. You’ll need a microSD card for this one even with the cartridge.

To get this point across the NBA 2K18 box art is going to be adorned with multiple warnings for that big download and the microSD card requirement. It’s kinda ugly, but at the same time so wonderful.

Take a look;

We still think, somehow despite all these warnings some poor child is going to be upset on Christmas.

    I was so keen on this game. Then they couldn’t fit the whole thing on a cartridge. Not great, but not a deal breaker. After all I’m happy to grab Doom, although I feel Doom’s solution is more logical.

    It’s the damn microtransactions. I’m not playing 200 games to get my characters stats up to a level that you could otherwise pay some money to get to. Or haircuts or shoes or all the other stuff. This is a full priced release that has F2P style microtransactions. Try again next year 2K.

    This is absolutely disgusting. It seems as if the Australian release is being shipped on an 8GB cartridge while the game is shipped on a 16GB cartridge elsewhere (which explains the delay).

    There is no point, NONE whatsoever in producing an expensive cartridge if the entirety of the game is unplayable without a mandatory download. This is so aggravatingly stupid that I can’t even fathom the thought process behind this. I hope this release crashes and burns. It deserves nothing less. Even more insulting is that an already expensive game is going to require about $15 or so worth of micro SD storage, further adding to the overall cost of the game.

      Is that true, are other regions getting nba 2k18 on a 16gb cart? That does suck. This does dampen my interest in 2k18, the one month delay perhaps was a blessing as a warning to back off.

      Surely not? How can they release a 16GB cartridge for all regions and Aus gets a 8GB cartridge? What a joke this game is proving to be. Who would’ve thought the more feature complete port by 2K would be of a game with such gross practices in place that any idea of buying it now seems repulsive to me.

      But before I jump the gun too much (lel) do you have a source for the cartridge difference?

          I’m not touching this game with a ten foot pole for reasons I’ve already outlined. Hoping for some competition in the basketball stakes next year or even 2K pulling their heads in.

          FIFA will do me for this year.

        I’ve checked with multiple sources and it seems that I was a tad presumptuous about the game shipping on a 16GB card elsewhere as NBA 2K18 is being shipped on an 8GB cartridge *worldwide* (containing only 6.8GB of data), and there is a mandatory 16.1GB download in addition to that, plus up to 5GB for save data (per user). The eShop advertises the total file size as being 22.9GB (6.8GB initial download + 16.1GB mandatory “software update”), which is certainly a very piggish move. Even the $140 Legend edition has the same cartridge, and elsewhere in the world, there is a “Gold” edition that costs about AU$180, which most likely utilises the same 8GB cartridge as well.

        Ubisoft shipped Just Dance 2017 on a 16GB cartridge which is now selling for $40 at most places, so a game like NBA of all things, especially with its ridiculously overpriced limited editions has no excuse whatsoever.
