Developers officially have no excuse – Wii U Pro Controller announced

Hot off the press from Iwata’s [pre-recorded] transmission Nintendo Direct, Nintendo have announced that the Wii U Pro controller will be coming to the Nintendo Wii U.

As we already knew, the Wii U will be compatible with other controllers you may already previously own, such as a Wii Remote, Nunchuk or Wii Balance board.

The Wii U Pro Controller will also be available for Nintendo’s new system and is an attempt at providing a more traditional control experience for what we can only assume are third party developers.

Sporting analog sticks and buttons, with no fancy touchscreens, the controller appears to have everything that you would expect to find on a standard game controller, including shoulder buttons/triggers, two analogue sticks, four face buttons and of course the Nintendo original D-Pad.

No pricing nor release details for the Wii U Pro Controller have been announced just yet – we’re not sure if you’ll get one in the box or if they will be only available separately. We do know, however, that third party developers now really have no excuse for not releasing their titles on the console and we’re looking forward to hearing further developments from them.

We’ll keep you updated, of course, as E3 plays out.

What do you think of the controller and it’s design? Is this a right step in the direction for Nintendo? Let us know in the comments.

I guess this is what we will be playing the next Smash Bros on.

Bit sad to see the Wii U Controller following the 360 and PS3 design. The Gamecube controller, imo, is still the most comfortable controller to use and really did have buttons in all the right places! (except that silly Z button)..

Yeah, I’m heaps glad they’ve done this, but the Gamecube controller is just the epitome – I would’ve preferred they’d just copied their old design.

Personally I am not a fan of the positioning of the control sticks. Then again, if they did it the 360 way I guess even MORE people would be crying rip-off which would be just as bad.

Guess I can’t really comment on comfort until I actually hold one =P

Let’s play “guess what franchise will ignore this gen’s controller”

If you successfully guess a Capcom, Rockstar or Valve IP, you get the lowest amount of points possible though.

Highest amount of points if you guess a Ubisoft IP.

Agree with James. Seems they just tried to put the sticks in an spot that neither the 360 or PS3 does…

Think I will stick with the wii classic controller, if possible.

I also agree with James. The positioning of the sticks just seems too high for a trational controller. I also share his view that it is difficult to cast judgment prior to holding one/hearing other’s opinions and analysis.

I think laharl is on the money with sticking with the Wii Classic Controller, but I don’t think it will be possible (seemed like it was specifically left out). That being said, this design seems to have better (analogue) shoulder buttons, which the Gamepad lacks.

The other problem there though is that I hate the way the Classic Controller layout is! It’s the same problem as the PS3 in that the analog sticks are just too close together!

Looks very much like a 360 controller with sticks in a different place. And with a better d-pad.
Should be a ton more comfortable than the regular old Classic Controller.

it seems to me, its been made for fps games.. the sticks are level, it has shoulder buttons and triggers..

aint that all you need for call of duty/halo/resistance and whatever other fps you can name?
