Warner Bros gets set to Free Willy on Wii

The perks of being a Japanese Wii owner expand, with Warner Bros to release some of its classic movies to the Everyones Theatre Wii channel

Fujisoft, makers of the Everyone’s Theater Wii service for the Japanese Wii, announced today a tie-up with Warner Entertainment Japan and Warner Brothers Digital Distribution that will make a bunch of Warner hits available for digital rental on the Wii. Fifty-four movies will be available starting tomorrow (July 15), priced at the service’s standard rental price of 300 WiiPoints for 48 hours.

Movies to be included are Free Willy, The Goonies, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins, Contact, Last Samuari and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Everyone’s Theater Wii channel is available to download on Japanese Wii’s from the Wii Shopping Channel for 500 points. The videos stream in DVD quality and there are range of movies, TV shows and anime on offer.

So what are the chances of this service making it outside of Japan? Slim. But, it just proves it can be done – and perhaps, even with the way the internet is (rubbish) here in Australia, streaming movies at DVD quality might just be possible.
