Nintendos profits may be down but its still selling a truck load of gear

The latest financial reports from Nintendo have today been released by the company and while profits are down, Nintendo is still selling loads of games and hardware. Nintendo profit was down 23% in the last quarter (Q3) of their financial year mainly thanks to slowing sales of DS games (had to happen) and the price cut of the Wii in the US and Japan. Nintendo has also kept its forecast that for the first time in 4 years it will have a decline in profit.

The holiday season was good to Nintendo though, as through the months of October to December they sold 11.3 million Wiis (up 8 percent) and 11.7 million DS units which was only slighty down from the 11.9 of the year before. In Yen that means Nintendo only made 192.3 billion yen where as last year it made 249.1 billion yen.

In addition to sales figures, Nintendo also released the up to date lifetime figures for the Wii and DS worldwide. These new figures put the Wii above the NES as the best selling Nintendo console ever. The figures also put the Nintendo DS within reach of the Playstation 2 as the best selling console ever. Not bad hey?

Figures

Japan
Wii – 9.7 million
DS – 29.9 million

America
Wii – 32 million
DS – 44.9 million

Other
Wii – 25.7 million
DS – 50.2 million
