Nintendo Australia sends a free DS after a schoolgirls letter

Could Nintendos goodwill turn against them as their mailbox floods with more requests?

As part of a class activity, students at a Victorian primary school were learning how to write letters to companies. Year 6 student Helen chose to address Nintendo (bless her) in her letter, as she is "a big fan" of theirs, not forgetting her "big request" for a DS.

Lo and behold, Nintendo replied by sending a new DS to the girl and now the exchange, which was posted online just two days ago, has gone viral on sites like Digg and Reddit with over 338,000 views.

But dont even think about taking advantage of Nintendos benevolence under a false pretence. According to Nintendos PR manager Heather Murphy, "Nintendo always calls the school, hospital, retirement home, or whatever it may be to ensure the letter is legitimate." And theyll be scrutinising letters even more closely since this story has gone public – in this case, Nintendo contacted the schools principal to verify that the DS would be well used.

Murphy adds that the company receives "hundreds" of letters per day and "unfortunately [they] are unable to respond to every one." She also thanks everyone who has written to Nintendo already.

So while the story has generated great publicity for Nintendo, its another day for the rest of us who have to endure delayed games and then pay for them. Just a thought. ;)
