While problems with share market and Nintendo may have stopped some larger announcements, that didnt stop Mr. Miyamoto from delivering his keynote and sharing his vision for game development.
More Inside
If you dont want to read below Nintendo has made the keynote available to stream here.
The Miyamoto keynote like most started a bit late, however eventually GDC boss Jamil Moledina appears to give the intro. A Wii menu appears on screen with a GDC07 channel, which then launches the Mii channel with a Miyamoto Mii which is then added to the plaza it fades away and then Miyamoto appears on stage.
Miyamoto then moved to using his Wii and specifically the photo channel to navigate through the slides during his presentation. Its been eight years since Miyamoto has presented at the GDC and he compares the top 5 games in North American for the time periods, he then moves onto how video games have gotten a bad reputation over the last few years with reporters focusing on how games and gamers were perceived this threat threatening to Mr. Miyamoto and other game developers.
Mr. Miyamoto then moved on to the Wife-O-Meter, if his wife can play a game or sit down and watch his play it then its doing will. Miyamoto says Miis are the first step in game design.
Moving onto third parties now, they were worried at the start that the Wii Remote would mean turning back on their traditional franchises. He says that with the Wii Remote comes balance and that allows this not to happen.
Moving onto risk, Miyamoto outlines that the GameCube was a halfway there step toward his vision, and even with the Giant A button on the GameCube controller it was still too complicated. With the Wii Remote Nintendo took a big risk and it wasnt until E3 when they saw the lines and happy faces that they knew they made the right decision with
Moving back to the DS launch, a video is shown of a Japanese girl squealing about getting her DS, Miyamoto says thats the reaction he has always wanted and when developing a game he keeps the image of a happy player in mind. These positive emotions are necessary to expand the gaming audience and lure in people who are scared of traditional games.
Mr Miyamoto then moved onto saying he wanted to make a realistic baseball game but because of the un-realistic Miis he couldnt, yet he still wants to in the future. And apparently Wii Sports Baseball has Mario characters in it to being with but people preferred the Miis
His last point was tenacity, the original Famicon was meant to have a face animation program on it at one point how ever they couldnt work it into a game, moving to the N64 they tried it again with Stage Debut however people still didnt like the idea. When another team started using his idea for a DS title, he told his team that they were useless, frustrated with himself Miyamoto held onto the idea and not until the Wii came along and then the idea for Miis came along and aloud Mr Miyamoto to use his idea 20 years later. At this point he also announced that he is working on a new Mii channel which will allow people to vote in popularity contests with their Miis. No details just the idea.
A video is shown of Super Mario Galaxy (which we will have up shortly) and Mr Miyamoto ended his keynote with this message
“”Your vision doesn’t have to be my vision,”" Miyamoto says. You should apply your own visions. “”You’ve given me a lot of faith about the future of our industry.”" True success will mean breaking out of the industry and becoming part of the larger culture. With Nintendo’s tools and visions, we can make it happen. “”We must always remember the human touch. After all, if we can convert my wife, we can convert anyone, right?”"
