Ever wondered what the popular handheld was known as before it became the DS?
The codenames for very early designs of what we now know as the DS have been revealed by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.
"Iris was the codename of a next-generation device we were exploring to succeed the Game Boy Advance—in other words, before development of the Nintendo DS," says Iwata. " Eventually, it became a two-screen device with the codename Nitro, which went out into the world as the Nintendo DS. So, broadly speaking, Iris was the foundation for the Nintendo DS.”
Iris and Nitro. Quite different from the DS or Dual Screen. What do you think? Were all familiar with other codenames for Nintendo system, notably the Dolphin that evolved in the Gamecube, and the Wiis original moniker Revolution. Do you think that perhaps Nintendo should retained the name Iris, or perhaps Nitro? Or did they take the right route with the DS?
